Russian telecommunications market is the largest in Europe and one of largest in the world due to the country's territory and population size. However, its power varies from region to region, and the most part of it is accumulated in Moscow, and St Petersburg, where the density of population is the highest. In the fixed-line sector Svyazinvest is leading the game, uniting previously state-ruled operators under its control. The company made its best to upgrade the equipment according to contemporary technologies, so the country now benefits from the majority of popular standards being implemented. Mobile market has also reached the point of its maturity, with network penetration over 100%. Still, a part of it is accumulated due to several SIM-card purchases by one subscriber, and the actual percent is lower than mentioned. Data services are weak point of Russian mobile operators, but their upcoming progress will bring the market to a new stage of evolution. 3G has been implemented only in several major cities, but MTS, the market leader, promises to extend the network to 40 cities until 2010.

Mobile market is dominated by three leading operators: MTS, VimpelCom and MegaFon. MTS is at the first place, taking responsibility for 34% of total market share. VimpelCom is at the second place, with 25% percent in its disposition. The company has just finally acquired Golden Telecom, and will likely see its business proliferate. The third place is occupied by MegaFon, having about 23%. MegaFon, being the third among market players, is the first to introduce 3G services to Russia. There are several smaller mobile operators in the market, accounting for the rest of market stake. Internet industry is dominated by broadband technologies, including ADSL, FttH, FttB and so on. With quality of fixed-lines varying from region to region, the predominant technology cannot be named. Due to the fact that the number of line broadband subscribers is growing slower in some areas, service providers tend to offer alternative services, like WiFi or WiMAX, and consumers react positively. The sector itself is highly competitive, with Comstar dominating in ADSL sphere, and having several competitors in face of Svyazinvest, Corbina, Moscow City Telephone Networks and so on.
